What is The City Cabaret?

For performers, The City Cabaret OKC provides an opportunity to escape the physical traits of roles which are commonly cast based on appearances. With that freedom in hand, they are given a central theme about which to choose works that are meaningful to them. Thus while the theme of the show is known ahead of time, the material which will be presented is unknown until the cast is chosen. Their performances deliver the power of their relationship to the music and create shows which serve as a snapshot of a group, time, and place.

For audiences, The City Cabaret OKC encapsulates what happens when performers gather in each other’s living rooms. In an intimate setting, we connect directly and emotionally with each other as friends often do but with the added advantage of communicating through music. Inclusive, unpretentious, and authentic, we pull down our walls for a while as we share our successes, struggles, joys, pain, and laughter.  We invite you to join in that experience, to be a part of our inner circle for an evening.

What WE are Not.

When people hear our name, sometimes they wonder if we present burlesque or striptease acts. Other times they think of the 1966 musical written by Kander & Ebb entitled Cabaret, as well as its 1972 film adaptation starring Liza Minnelli, in which heavy eyeliner and lingerie were prominently featured to create instantly recognizable and very memorable images.

We are not those. We know some burlesque performers and appreciate their art, but everyone at The City Cabaret OKC performs fully clothed at all times. Kander and Ebb’s Cabaret is an amazing show and while we might have an occasion to present a selection from it, we stay far away from its iconic look and we do not offer a complete production of any individual show.

WHAT IS A SHOW LIKE?

You can expect talented singers, skilled instrumentalists, and surprising arrangements of selections from a variety of sources which are organized around unifying themes. There's usually an intermission and with it, the show runs about two hours. Enjoy being entertained in a manner so unique that the only possible way to explain it fully to someone else is to bring that person to the next show.

Below is a good example of what The City Cabaret OKC strives to achieve. This video is from Feinstein's/54 Below in New York City, which we highly recommend visiting. Jeremy Jordan and Laura Osnes will not be performing with us in the foreseeable future, unfortunately, but we hope one day they might!
